musings of an outdoorsman

Subtle Signs Autumn is near.

“Wow! It’s brisk this morning.” Summer is certainly waning.

For the first time since I’ve been here, I felt the extra coolness of the morning, as I lie in bed. And after getting up, getting ready and stepping outside, I sure felt it. Summer is definitely coming to an end, for Montana anyway. Won’t be long before Starbucks begins offering it’s pumpkin spice latte; Last day of September seems to be this year’s kickoff date. Stores are beginning to showcase their autumnal wares. Meanwhile, driving amongst the grove of cottonwoods, their noticeable change in color is starting to tell the story; Autumn is around the corner. It is quite the stark difference from back home where temperatures are at or nearing triple digits.

It’s not abundantly apparent to the casual observer, but even animals are beginning to exhibit subtle signs of the pending change. Crows are beginning to fly around in smallish groups with a lot more vocalizations. It’ll be entertaining to watch the large roosts in the winter.

This past week, work was plagued by a series of thunderstorms that halted work. Sure we’re on the cusp of summer ending and fall beginning, but summer thunderstorms still loom and are dangerous. And every time lightning strikes six miles or less, we have to halt work and take cover for a half hour. What’s even worse, the clock resets with every new lightning strike inside of that six mile zone. This week, there was one day we stopped down for almost three hours.

Though the impending arrival of Autumn is on my doorstep, we still have to deal with the mid-afternoon temperatures that late summer brings. Fortunately, these higher temperatures are only hanging around for another couple of weeks.

One of the things I look forward to during this period of seasonal change is the music I listen to. This time of year, at least until Thanksgiving, I listen to Vintage Autumn music.

Yeah, so no fishing today, but I am enjoying the phenology of Autumn.
