musings of an outdoorsman

Random Thoughts at Sunrise

I sat there quietly in my camp chair, overlooking the woods, waiting for the sunrise. I’d been there since 5am, a little later than usual, but there none the less. The folding side table on the chair held my morning drink and pack of backwoods.

My mind slowly drifted in and out of thoughts, while the smoke from my cigar slowly rose and danced around me. One second I’d be aware of my surroundings and the next I would find myself having random thoughts.

“Boy, the outdoor genre on the internet sure has changed,” I thought as I took a drag from my cigar. “Either that or I’ve changed and moved on.” It feels like up until ten or so years ago, there was a certain rawness in the information out there. Today, it has just become ordinary. There doesn’t seem to be that pizzazz. “Hmmm! Perhaps it’s just my zeal that’s simmered. Maybe I’ve just gotten to a point in my life where I am at peace with what I know.” I took another drag of the cigar and exhaled. “Damn! there are a lot of people in the online outdoor community I used to follow who have either disappeared or changed their approach. I guess we all evolve and eventually move on.”

One thought drifted to another. “Is it just me, or are others also put-off by overly nice people?” Yes, that’s actually a thought that crossed my mind this morning. I was thinking about it enough that I looked it up to see if it was a real thing. You know what? It really is a thing and apparently more common than I thought. I’ll be damned! Generally speaking, people don’t like overly nice people. People tend to feel overly nice people are shady and annoying. I can’t say I disagree. Now, don’t get me wrong, I like nice people, just not over the top nice.

“There you are Mr. Sun. Good morning.”
