The Wind Down Begins. I’m leaving Butte

Yep, I’m getting into this weird habit of writing once every three weeks. Hmmm! Seems like it has a lot to do with this place. I absolutely do not like Butte, Montana. It is, for me anyway, depressing. Fortunately, my time here is drawing to a quick end.

It appears the powers to be had a change of heart about working here through the winter. I’m sure the amusing reactions from the locals about us working outside during the winter had a lot to do with the change in schedule. As of right now, we’re scheduled to go home for thanksgiving, come back, work for two weeks, then move on. For my part, I’ve put the supervisors on notice, I will likely not be coming back after Thanksgiving, but I will reconvene with them at the new job site. However, if they chose not to bring me back, I’m okay with that decision; I have other opportunities waiting.

Since I arrived, almost two months ago, I had little desire to go out and about. Sure, I at times did, but was trying and force myself out of this deep dislike for this crap hole of a town. I suppose, however, if your idea of fun is hanging out at bars in uptown, then perhaps you can tolerate Butte far easier than I can. Since I don’t drink, and am only interested in outdoor activities, Butte is not the place for me. In fact, I say this with all sincerity, it appears the wildlife want nothing to do with Butte either. When I was in the Bitterroot, wildlife was abundant. Everywhere you turned one could count on seeing deer. Since I’ve been in Butte, I’ve seen maybe three deer, though way outside of town. “Wow, you’re bitching way too much. ‘Yeah, well, this place will do that to you. There’s a reason there’s a meth problem in this town, and a lot of bars.'”

Not all has been such a downer. I took the time to drive out to Big Hole river again and experience the fall colors. It really helped add a little positive thinking back into my situation. The colors were beautiful. I hit it at peak time. Thank goodness for small opportunities to help me out of the funk I’ve been in.
