“hey, just want to let you know I’ll be out of cell range all day.” That’s the message I left back home on my way to work this morning.
We had another big day out in Sula. Well, for us it was another just in case something happens we need you there. Simply translated,”take a book and smoke em if you got em.” And that’s exactly what we did for over thirteen hours; one big pile of nothing.
For me it was quite exciting not having access to cell service or wifi. For others, who had nothing to do, it really was quite amusing watching them prance around looking for signal. And once they give up on trying to get signal, it then becomes entertaining watching them trying to figure out what to do with their time.
The creek bubbling next to the truck and white poplars shimmering in the breeze make for the idyllic environment. The sights and sounds are mesmerizing. For me, it’s like time traveling to a time free of modern conveniences. Oh how I miss the times before computers and cell phones. “haha well that’s an amusing statement considering I’m tapping away this article on my phone. Oh the irony.”
This is the first full week I’ll experience without rain since I’ve been here. I’d almost thought Montana had forgotten about summer, yet here it is; summer has arrived. This place truly is magical and I’m blessed to be here.
My obsession with fishing has truly grown. Is it this place? Has the Bitterroot valley cast a spell on me? Has it entangled me in its web? Perhaps it’s the knowledge my stay here is fleeting and I’m trying to squeeze out of it as much as I can. Whatever it is, I find myself constantly thinking about it, constantly exploring hidden gems of water. “I bet there’s fish right there,” is a thought that regularly crosses my mind.
Not everyone who’s here is drawn in by the wild. Not everyone here can hear the call of the wild.
