musings of an outdoorsman

Fall is here

Yeah, I know it’s been a while — three weeks. Work has had me so involved, I really couldn’t wrap my head around writing. Even now I struggle to lay my thoughts down. I suppose I should start with what’s been going on.

Not so much this week, but the last two weeks were mired with air quality issues; So much so, we had to shut down a few times. Sure, it was a welcome reprieve to go home early, but that only completely screwed up plans moving forward. The fires in Idaho, and I guess Oregon, really made the situation bad here in Montana.

In all honesty, I have not gone fishing. Seriously, these past three weeks have just dampened the mood. The one day I could have conceivably gone out, the air quality was so bad, one couldn’t see the mountain a mile from my house. Yeah, no thank you.

I guess it’s officially fall. The weather certainly is apropos. I’m currently sitting in our work trailer writing this, as the first rainstorm of fall quickly approaches. The wind has really kicked up and the clouds are moving in swiftly. Apparently, the rain is to begin in an hour or so and run through to Friday. You know what though? I’ll take this weather over what it’s been like back home — hot!

So, what is it I do during weather that keeps me indoors? Truthfully, beginning in the fall each year, I begin to phase into the lifestyle of the old outdoorsmen, in that I start dusting off some of the old books of the Old Woodsmen of a time gone by — Kephart, Nessmuk, Miller, Seton, White and others. So, in the coming articles, don’t be surprised if some of my musings are regarding that “Golden Age of Camping.” For now, I’m going to sign off and go enjoy a Backwoods and the rain that’s knocking.
