“Bro, you should have an instagram page,” my friend at work said to me.
“Nope! Not going to happen. Nothing screams narcissism like a social media page. The idea of posting something and then checking to see how many likes and comments you have is sickening and disturbing. How little must one think of themselves that they post stuff to seek validation from strangers,” I replied to my friend.
“But it’s a way to share what you’re doing with friends and family,” he retorted.” Besides, you have a web page. That’s a form of social media.”
“Yeah, sure, the website is public, but the difference is there is no way to comment, like, or even contact me,” I replied. “If my friends and family read it and want to contact me about it, they can call or text me. If they don’t, meh! I feel no compulsion to feed my ego with comments and likes from strangers. Don’t get me wrong, I feel social media is important for business from a marketing and branding standpoint, but for personal use, yeah, nah!”
“Alright, man, I get it, but you don’t know what you’re missing out on,” my friend replied.
“You know, It’s been a few years since the last drop of alcohol touched my lips. Prior to that moment, I was all in with social drinking and what not. The day I stopped, something amazing happened. I gained clarity, peace and happiness. Also, It’s been a few years since I had a social media account. You know what happened the day I stopped? I gained clarity, peace and happiness. Maybe, just maybe, the one missing out is you.”
Crickets are all I could see coming from his eyes. The silence said it all. Just then, the silence was broken by a radio call and we leapt into action.
Honestly, I do understand the need for social media, but not everyone needs social media; certainly not me. What I need is more time in the woods.
