I am a really big fan of Land-Nav, and every so often participate in orienteering contests.
A while back, I came across the book UTM, by John Carnes, available through Amazon or maptools.com
While I already know UTM, I was quite excited to see a book dedicated to to UTM coordinates. What caught my eye even more was/is the fact that along with the book is included a 7.5 minute grid plastic overlay.
Does this book deliver? You bet. It lays it out clearly and concisely. It really breaks it down and will help the student along his/her way in becoming more proficient at using an easy map reading system. It also includes some exercises to help you along the way.

I’ve been using UTM for several years, and, by far it is the easiest system for me.
Along with UTM, the book also includes MGRS (Military Grid Reference System)
The best part of all of this is the price… $7.95. IMHO for the price alone, it is worth purchasing, especially when you consider you also get the grid overlay.
This book deserves to be part of your loadout.
